Keeping pets

Types of pets and permission

Whether and which animals are allowed in the rental property is generally stated in the tenancy agreement or in the house rules. However, there are separate rules for the different species.

Small animals

Small animals such as hamsters or guinea pigs may be kept without consent, provided the number is limited and the animals are kept appropriately.

Larger animals and animals that may cause a disturbance

These categories include dogs, cats and parrots. In this case, complaints are often made about noise and odour, and the keeping of dogs and cats leads to greater wear and tear on the rental property. The landlord may prohibit the keeping of such animals without providing a reason. Inquire about permission to keep pets in advance.

Birds, wild animals and poisonous animals (e.g. snakes and spiders)

Certain animals subject to species protection regulations require a licence from the cantonal veterinary office. Please consult the website of the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office in advance.

Insurance

In general, liability insurance which pays for damage caused by pets is compulsory for all pet owners. Especially for ornamental fish, it is advisable to take out insurance to cover the costs in the event of water damage.
